めざせレベル30...今日はラッキーにも25くらいいけるかも、と思ったらやっぱりだめでした。
fluffなんて知るわけ無いやろ。。このテストできついのは英語で選択肢が出てくることがあること。。
parmesan パルメザンチーズそのまんまですが、これが英語で出てきたので必死で選択肢読みました。こういうのを早く読めるようになるには、やっぱり、読解力をのばすしかないんだろうな・・・多読も精読もがんばらねば。。

Lyons says H and B deliberately has its interns work on wide variety of tasks including activities not directly connected with its business such as town meetings and holidays celebrations.
Garcia says she's learned a interns isshould be responsible for at least one specific project, Lyons says teaching interns has also helped him grow as a manager. Garcia stresses the importance of making internships enjoyable.

Just the opposite:
Exactly the opposite, in other words, complete opposite. You might read something like
Analysts predicted higher gas prices this summer but just the opposite has occurred. Prices have dropped 10%. Or someone asked you, Has Mary lived up to her good reputation? You might say, Just the opposite I'm afraid we were very disappointed at with her work.

Experience has taught me:
Garcia has learned through experience, she means.
Experience has taught me that first expressions are often wrong for example. And You cancould put many other words atin the place of experience, you might say my losses on the stock market have taught me to go for safe long term investments. Or being a father has taught me to put family before work.

In a business context:
Garcia uses context to mean the circumstances , the setting in which something happens
And which affected. Context is also used to describe the words or statements that surround another word or statement and affect its meaning.
If someone asked me to translate the Japanese word 真面目 for example, I'd ask what’s the context, because 真面目 can be translated many different ways depending on full sentence or situation which it is being used in.

Look good on a resume:
Well thisIt means just what it sounds like something will be impressive one wasit's read on someone’s resume. We also have the expression look good on paper. Which means something is impressive when you read about it like on a resume or in a proposal, for example. But it may not be an accurate representation of its real value. A job candidate might look good on paper for example have an impressive resume, but not actually do a good job when he’s hired.

Show someone the ropes:
This expression uses the image of sailors handling the ropes on a ship, on a sailing ship. If we show someone the ropes we show them how to do something. We also teach people the ropes and they learn the ropes. Imagine you are using some software for the first time. You could say to thea colleague, I've never used this before, could you teach me the ropes?

Overlook:
Overlook is often used to mean miss something, fail to notice, or recognize it.
You could say his contribution to this project is completely overlooked. He didn’t get any credit at all.

Tied-dyed: This takes me back.
Tied dying is extremely common in at Us summer camps for at least it was back in my day. When you tied dye a T shirt you tie up one or more sections. So dye can't reach them. And that produces patterns of white and colors on the shirt.

まわりのtweetをみると、みなさんフツーにレベル30とかとられてるのでレベル30もしくはそれ以上をめざそうと思います。

Garcia recommends that interns try to stand out through such efforts staying later than others. And Lyons urges finding a role model in yourthe office. Umemura asks how companies should select the most effectively utilized intenrs and Garcia says H and B chooses them as carefully as it does to regular staff It meansaiming to hire studnets with appropriate skills.Lyons adds H and B tries to link interns with other employees once they join the company.

Work later than everyone else:
In extreme cases, Garcia might recommend that interns burn the midnight oil. In other words, stay up very late working or studying. This expression refers to the oil that people used to burn in lamps a long time ago. For example, my son has anhis entrance exams next month so he is burning the midnight oil. Or I have to burn the midnight oil
to finish this repot on time.

Office role model:
A role model is someone whose behavior is imitated by others, who serves as an example on how to behave.
We also discibe people in things as a model of something.
In other words, an excellent example of it, who should be emulated in that regard.
A person could be a model of kindness.
A company could be a model of efficiency.

There is also the expression make the most of.
Which means use something to best advantage, get the most benefit out of it.
I use a lot of shelves to make the most of the limited space in my apartment. for example.

Compatible with:
Garcia's using compatible to mean matches, fits, it can also mean, able to exist harmoniously with something else.
Imagine Mr.A you know who is very serious and Mr.B who's always telling jokes.
They might not get along, because their personalities are not compatible. Thetheir personalities are incompatible.

We also use compatible regarding computers and other technologies to mean they can be used together.
For example, this old software isn't compatible with athe new operating system.

Stuff an envelope:
Here stuff is a verb, meaning fill, pack with something. It can also be a noun as in anthe idiom, know one's stuff.
And This refers to someone being very knowledgeable in a certain field, a certain area.
You might tell someone, oh go to this shop if you want a camera, the owner really knows his stuff, and can tell you just which model is best for you

Fend for oneself:
This means to take care of oneself, get by on one's own. There is also this expression fend off, which means to repel something or ward it off.
The company fended it off ora take over a bid for example, or the team fended it off a 9th inning rally by its opponent.

Hook someone up with:
This means to create a tie, an association between certain parties.

Lyons tells Umemura and Garcia about a working dinner he’s recently attended at which members of a business organization asked him and other executives about how intern to turn college students into excellent interns. He adds that internship gives students huge advantage in finding jobs after graduation. And says nearly 40% of this year entry level positions werewill be taken by former interns.

Hottopic:
Now This is the topic that's beenbeing discussed with great energy inand by many people, that many people are strongly interested in. Whether to focus on stimulus measures or austerity policies has been a hot topic in Europe, for example.

Pick someone's brain about:
The image here is going through someone's brain to get ideas or information from them. A friend of mine is a veteran political reporter, it's very interesting to talk to him to pick his brain on issues like national security.

There's also the expression, rack one's brain, which means try hard to remenber something or think of something. As in I've racked my brain but I can't think of a good example sentence for rack one's brain.

Outstanding:
Lyons uses this to mean excellent, superior. You hear about outstanding students, outstanding food. If you read an excellent report, you could tell the person who wrote it, outstanding work, really outstanding.

Outstanding can also mean, unpaid or unsettled as in, outstanding bills or outstanding debts.

Give someone a head start:
A head start is an early start that gives someone an advantage in someway, originally the expression is from horse racesing. If I say I want to get a head start on this report, then I want to start early so I am sure to make the deadline, have plenty of time gatheringto gather the information that sort of things.

In the hope:
NowWell this means we do something hoping it will result in some outcome, leavelead to some outcome. For example, she is taking anone extra work in the hope of impressing her boss. Or he's studying French in the hope of being transferred to Europe.

Entry level position:
Lyons's using entry level to mean the lowest level job in the company or field thandone by people when they first enter that organization or field. It can be hard to get by on an entry level salary for example.

Entry level can also refer to a product that has relatively simpler features and costlesscosts less than other models and types. You could say, XYZ Technology 's just released a new entry level tablet computer a priced at just 200$.

Prospective:
This means possible, potential. If you have a meeting with a prospective client, then you have a meeting with someone who may become a client.

Any number of:
Garcia is using this expression to mean many, as in there are any number of places where we can have lunch this area is full of great restaurants.

red neck term

11月頭に同じくMIAのレッスンをとっているKさんと楽しくランチしてきました。
そこで知ったのが I reckon という表現です。
それまで聞いたことなかったので、彼女にそれがイギリス英語でi thinkを意味することを教えてもらい、勉強になったなーと思い帰ってきました。ちなみに先日読みおわった本”The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”にこのi reckonを発見。この本はイギリス英語でかかれてます。

で、昨日それを思い出してアメリカ人パートナーSにI reckonって使う?と聞いてみました。
アメリカではこれはあまり使わないそうで、意味は i guess.
イギリスとアメリカではこの言葉に対する認識が違うそうで、これは山の上に住んでいるような人が使うred neck termだといわれました。

red neck term:労働者階級が使う言葉。

だからアメリカでは使わないほうがいいとのこと。ちなみにred neck termには,例えば

I'm fixing to go to the store

Umemura tells Garcia that a sophomore that is inat an Ohio college has contacted him about a possible summer internship at H and B. He praises the student's work as a brand ambassador for the company. And Garcia confirms that H and B will accept the sophomores as interns if they are qualified.
Garcia also tells Umemura that H and B pays to theits interns to bolster their self esteem and sense of being professional.

Receivean email from:
Umemura also could have said, I've just heard from one of the student ambassadors. That would be a broader term and included the possibility that Martha had called Umemura on the phone or contacted through social media.

Work as an intern:
Other variations on this include, do an internship or just intern, as a verb.
As in, Martha wants to know about the possibility of doing an internship here or
Martha wants to know about the possibility of interning here.

Know what one is doing:
This means having the knowledge necessary to perform a certain task, have the ability to fulfill the task. Choosing the right investment can be tricky so people hire financial advisers
because we hope they know what they are doing. They're well informed about the different options. you know how to minimize tax burdens etx. In contrast, I wouldn't try to fix a serious problem,
with my computer by myself. Because I wouldn't know what I was doing, and I would make things worse.

Be up to snuff:
This is a phrase of unknown origin and according to my idiom dictionary, it is not clear. Why up to snuff means at an acceptable level of quality. at an acceptable standard.
Someone studying a foreign language might say I can read pretty well but my listening is not up to snuff yet.

Reinforce:
Garcia is using reinforce to mean strengthen by adding some kind of support, the recent job date reinforced the view that the economy is slowly recovering for example. There is also athe noun, reinforcement. Which often refers to rewarding some action so thatthe person will do it again. For example, giving someone a bonus for exceeding their sales quota would be positive reinforcement.

Butt in:
This expression uses the image of an animal, shoving its hones into something. It means intrude, interfere and interrupt We all get annoyed, when someone butts in our private life don’t we?

Add one's two cents' worth:
We often use two cents’ worth to mean someone’s opinion on some subject, their thoughts.
And you can leave off the worth, just say ones two cents,
Imagine you join an online discussion about raising corporate taxes. You could write
To add my 2 cents on this issue I think raising tax is a bad idea because it will discourage company’s from investment, hiring more people

Today, I was a bit surprised at a news paper.
According to it, a Japanese tobacco company JT, which is the third-biggest by sales volume in the world, is now performing well.

Due to the several crackdowns by Japanese government, more precisely, the huge decrease of smoking rate by repeated price hike of tobacco, I thought it couldn't have fared well, rather I expected it would reduce its scale.

The article says, there are 2 factors that explain this.

One is their aggressive M&A carried out many times. It seems to have spent more than 3 trillion yen on such deals. Last year, it acquired a major tobacco company in Sudan, which, at the risk of my ignorance, makes me wonder what kind of advantage there is in getting such a firm located in rural area.

The other is their enthusiasm to explore overseas market. One of their efforts for this is the name change of their most popular commodity, MILD SEVEN, which actually my father used to smoke as well, to MEVIUS. It will do so next February because some countries don't allow it to sell MILD SEVEN due to the use of the word "mild".

To be honest, I don't like JT, because it is a company whose products can harm people so much. However, I think a lot of Japanese companies should follow JT's struggle.
